100-year-old craftsmanship under construction

Bankskøyta

For the first time in a century a sunnmørsk bank smack is under construction in Ålesund harbour.

It has been said that Ålesund has the most important fishing harbour in Norway. The towns fleets is one of the most modern in Europe, but in these days a replica of an old sunnmørsk bank smack is being constructed by Hardanger Fartøysvernsenter. On behalf of the Foundation Kjell Holm and Stiftinga Sunnmøre Borgundgavlen.

The construction is taking place at Prestebrygga, where Hurtigruta and all cruise lines visiting Ålesund docks. If you want to follow the process yourself, the local newspaper, Sunnmørsposten, has located a webcamera at the constructionsite.

During The Tall Ships Races this summer, this bank smack will be ready to set sails. The city will be full of sailing ships, sailors and sailing enthusiasts and everyone will be welcome to come aboard this window into the past. Hopefully this will rekindle the knowledge and craftsmanship around building and equipping a seagoing fishing vessel.
